Earth Day Project: How To Make A Seed Bomb

Seed bombs are a fun, easy project perfect for children and adults to do together as a way to welcome spring and learn about the environment. The finished product makes a great gift for Earth Day and Mother’s Day, too! There are so many different ways to make seed bombs! We’ve chosen to share a technique that requires materials you’re more likely to have on hand in order to make this activity as fuss-free as possible. For this project, you will need:

Construction paper

Water

Blender or food processor

Strainer or colander

Seeds

Molds or cookie cutters (optional)

Step 1: Cut or tear a few pieces of construction paper into small, confetti-like pieces and place them into a bowl.

Step 2: Add about two cups of water to the bowl, or enough to cover the pieces of paper completely. Let the paper soak in the water for about 20 minutes.

Step 3: Pour the water/paper mixture into a blender or food processor and blend it into a pulp.

Step 4: Strain and squeeze most of the water out of the pulp. You’ll want to keep the blended paper slightly wet in order to mold it into the shape you want, but you don’t want your blended paper to be dripping or soggy.

Step 5: Now for the best part €“ adding the seeds! You can add any seeds you want to your seed bombs. Wildflowers, herbs, or anything you have on hand. We made sure to keep our empty seed packet so that we would remember what we planted and how to care for them.

Step 6: You can use baking molds or cookie cutters to create fun shapes for your seed bombs, or you can just use your hands to form them into small balls or patties. Be sure to squeeze any excess water out while you’re forming your shape. Once your seed bombs are in the shape that you want, you can leave them out to dry completely.

Step 7: Once your seed bombs are dry, they’re ready to go! Just plant them below a layer of dirt with some sunshine and water, or gift them to a loved one.
